The Metropolitan Hotel Orange

Our History

Built in 1864 as John Woodward’s store (the second brick store in Orange), the Metropolitan became a hotel in 1886. John West was the first licensee. With its rich volcanic soils, reliable rainfall and 870m elevation, the city of Orange has a multi-layered history. First occupied by the traditional Wiradjuri land owners, the area known previously as Blackman’s Swamp (after JohnBlackman, the Chief Constable of Bathurst) was proclaimed the village of Orange in 1846. This was after Prince William of Orange, who had commanded the Mayor, Thomas Mitchell, during the Napoleonic Wars. The 1851 discovery of gold at nearby Ophir and then Lucknow gave a huge boost to the predominantly farming and grazing settler population. Many of Orange’s historic buildings such as Duntryleague – and The Metropolitan – were directly or indirectly built from the spoils of this gold (and copper) rush. Today gold mining remains a major driver of our thriving regional hub, along with medical care, government, education, agriculture, horticulture, and of course our renowned food and wine tourism.
